Many many thanks to you for documenting this issue and it's solution David.. I spent hours wrestling with this exact problem and even changed my hard disk thinking it might be trashed. After a Time Machine restore I reinstalled the ZTE modem software and was promptly back to square one ie: a non booting mac. Only at that point did I suspect the modem software and Google led me to your page. I followed your instructions to boot into target disk mode and started up my old iMac to copy libcurl.4.dylib over to my dead MacBook Pro and viola! we're up and running again. The replacement hard disk that I installed was a leftover from an earlier upgrade on a different machine so didn't cost me anything and is 250GB while the original is 160GB, so it was sort of worth it to go through this problem because I now have more space and I've also learned something, all without spending any money.

Happy days!

I have a 620 model dongle and it works fine ..... until I try and shutdown my macbook pro! It seems the broadband program won't quit , even after quitting the little blue light is under the icon meaning its still active. Then I go and force quit and try and shutdown, and I get the blue screen with the revolving circle.... forever!! I have to force a shutdown from the power button .... not good.
I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have just checked the dongle box and it says will work on macs with 10.4,10.5 and 10.6.

Very helpful post. Just wanted to add that I fixed this on my air (no firewire) by booting into single user mode, putting the crucial file on a usb stick, mounting the usb stick
see e.g.
http://macsage.com/mounting-usb-drive-in-single-user-mode/
and then just copy it from stick to /usr/lib

Thank you for this. I got caught out the other day and used a friends t-mobile USB stick in an emergency. Needless to say my MacBook pro acted up during the day and hung on re-boot. I keep a cline drive and got working again with you help. Fantastic.
